EVERTON STUDENTS EXCEL AT 25th ANNUAL REGIONAL MODEL BRIDGE CONTEST
On Thursday, March 12, 2026 the Southwest Chapter of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers held the 25th Annual Regional Model Bridge Contest at Missouri Southern State University. Everton entered 20 bridges into the competition and eight placed in the Top 10!
Congratulations to the following students:
10th Place - Katie Gibbens
9th Place - Amarah Smith
8th Place - Necie Mead
7th Place - Laura McCray
6th Place - Braydon Holland
5th Place - Haeven Stewart
4th Place - Dakota Grady
2nd Place - Trace Renfrow
Notably, the top three finishers receive cash prizes of $500, $150 and $100 respectively. Freshman, Trace Renfrow, earned 2nd place and is therefore also eligible to participate in the International Bridge Building Contest in April! His bridge only weighed 20.91 grams and carried 48.10 pounds for an efficiency ratio of 1043.4.
Bridges are designed and built by high school students using 3/32” x 3/32” lengths of Basswood. The bridge specifications require a maximum weight of 25 grams with maximum dimensions of length 350 millimeter by width 75 millimeter by height 100 millimeter. Total weight includes weight of wood and glue.
Ms. Ficken notes the importance of fostering STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in students. "STEM empowers students to become critical thinkers, problem solvers, and innovators. With building model bridges students see engineering principles through the lens of a real world application. There is tremendous growth in confidence and creativity throughout the process as well."

We have another busy week ahead of us! Catch all the details and the Meal Menu below!

This week, our 2nd grade students in Title 1 explored the phonics patterns "al" and "ol" through a hands-on learning experience. Students read an informative text about the science behind using salt and ice to create homemade ice cream—and then put theory into practice!
Working together, they combined ice, salt, milk, and sugar in bags and shook their way to tasty triumph! The excitement was real when they realized that a little elbow grease (and some basic chemistry) actually works! It was a fun blend of literacy, science, and sweet success!
